Eastern Virginia Medical School was established in 1973. EVMS has approximately 400 M.D. students, 200 students in various health profession programs, 300 residents and fellows, and more than 200 full-time faculty. Special programs include the Hearing and Balance Center, the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, the Center for Pediatric Research, the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Sleep Disorders Center, the Strelitz Diabetes Center, and the Virginia Prostate Center.

The CRC serves the clinical site for the Contraceptive Research and Development (CONRAD) program, established in 1986 with a multi-million dollar grant from the United States Agency for International Development. The CONRAD program sponsors both basic and clinical contraceptive research and fellowships.
